Book Review: Water for Elephants
I borrowed a copy of Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants and was promised that I wouldn’t be able to put it down. My friend was right! I dove head first into this book that flips back and forth between 93 year old Jacob Jankowski’s life in a nursing home and Jacob’s younger days working at a circus.
As fate would have it, Jacob’s jump onto a moving train to escape his own life thrusts him into the middle of the circus world. Jacob must learn to navigate the dark and complicated world of the Benzini Brothers prohibition era traveling circus. Jacob’s life becomes a mix of glitz and glamor and the sleazy circus underworld. While fulfilling his role as the circus veterinarian, Jacob finds love and friendship from several unlikely companions.
Water for Elephants has been made into a movie and is set to be released in April 2011.
(While I’m all for Kindle and the I-pad, I think curling up with a paperback will always be in fashion!)
