The Weekender: September 16-18

The air is crisp, the sun is bright, and we want to grab a cozy sweater and go apple picking. Here are our top things to do this weekend.

How Bout Them Apples. Smolak Farms is hosting their Apple Festival on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am-4 pm. There will be lots of kid-friendly activities including photos with Johnny Appleseed and hide-and-seek in the apple orchards. For adults? As many delicious apples as you care to pick!

Getting Artsy. Saturday and Sunday, check out the South End Open Studios from 11 am-6 pm. United South End Artists will be sharing their latest and greatest pieces. Get inspired to create your own artwork or shell out some cash and take an original piece home with you.

Sing It Out Loud. There’s ample opportunity for music along the Charles River this weekend. Mix 104.1 is hosting MixFest tomorrow at the DCR Hatch Shell. This free event with musical acts including Life House, Michelle Branch, Sara Bareilles, and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, it’s sure to be a great day of song. Sunday night, the 8th annual Revels RiverSing takes place by the Weeks Footbridge and features 100 local chorus members.

Football Sunday. Our hometown heroes, the New England Patriots, play their home opener on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. Foxboro is the place to be, whether you’re watching the game or shopping at nearby Patriot Place.

Locally Grown. Celebrate local gardens, growers, and food at Sunday’s Cambridge Urban Ag Fair. The 3rd annual event runs from 11 am through 5 pm in Harvard Square. Check out New England’s bounty, attend cooking demonstrations, listen to live music, or drop by the beer garden to sip locally crafted brews.

Wow, it’s going to be a busy weekend!  Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like to see listed on The Weekender? To be considered, send us a note at info@thebostondaybook.com.
