The Weekender: October 7-10

Happy Friday to you! Do you have a long weekend? We probably know more people that have to work on Columbus day than those who get it off. Regardless of whether your weekend is long or not, there are plenty of reasons (and ways!) to celebrate. Here are our picks.

Battle of the IPAs. There’s no denying that beer season is here. Head to City Feed and Supply this Saturday where local breweries will battle for the best IPA. Stay awhile to taste the varieties and be sure to vote for your favorite.

Day at the Museum. Head to the Museum of Fine Arts if you get to skip work this Monday. Admission is free all day.

Sharpen Your (Archeological) Tools. The Museum of Science and the Archeological Institute of America have partnered for a day of sharing their craft with the community. More than twenty-five archeology researchers will be on-hand to discuss their research and to answer any burning questions you may have. Also, there will be plenty of activities, presentations and time to visit the special exhibit, A Day in Pompeii.

Opening Our Doors. This weekend, celebrate the 10th anniversary of  Fenway Alliance’s Opening Our Doors initiative. This Monday, many of Boston’s cultural destinations will be free and open to the public. In addition, there will be an array of special events taking place throughout the day. Of note: Project STEP performance at The Mary Eddy Baker Library, walking tour around the Emerald Necklace, and a special performance by the Conservancy Cabaret. So many fun and free activities, so little time!

Arlington Reel. Weren’t able to make it to this year’s Boston Film Festival? Not to fret. There’s still time to head to the Arlington International Film Festival. Be sure to visit their website and watch a few trailers. You’ll want to grab your tickets right away!

SoWa in the Winter. Did you hear the great news? SoWa will be open this winter, from November 13 to April 29 at 460 Harrison Avenue. Unfortunately, the space is limited to food vendors and farms, but still, better than nothing, right? SoWa is still outside for the time being (through the end of October) — and with a beautiful weekend ahead, be sure to meander through the vintage market and grab lunch from one of the many food carts.

Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like to see listed on The Weekender? To be considered, send us a note at info@thebostondaybook.com. And as always, have a fabulous weekend!
