The Weekender: June 21-23

the weekender

Hello, summer! Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It also marks the official beginning of summer! We plan to make use of those extra hours of daylight this weekend. Here are our top picks:

Celebrate the Solstice. Tonight from 5-9 pm, the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture are hosting an event to celebrate the solstice. Live music, ice cream, lots of special activities, and free admission to the museums make it a great time to stop by!

Live Music in Harvard Square. The 6th Annual Make Music Harvard Square is this Saturday! Inspired by Paris-born “Fête de la Musique,” a wide variety of musicians will take to the streets of Harvard Square, touching on genres from rock and roll, hip hop, folk, and jazz. The festivities (on 14 different stages!) begin at 2 pm and continue until 10 pm.

Art + Community = Renewal. That is the goal of the Foundry Equation: An Art Initiative and Open House. On Saturday, local art advocates FLUX. Boston, Opus Affair, Voltage Coffee, and Yes.Si.Oui join together to present art, music, and improv at 101 Rogers Street in Cambridge. As the city decides the fate of this historic industrial building, Saturday’s event explores the potential of using it as a large community arts space. Free to all, the space is open from 11 am-3 pm. Learn more on The Foundry Equation website and event facebook page.

BBQ Beach Party. The Phantom Gourmet hosts the biggest barbecue rib festival on the East Coast this weekend! If barbecue is your thing, don’t miss barbecue teams from all over the world, beer gardens, live music, and all those quintessential summer foods you know you love. Friday and Saturday the party is on at City Hall Plaza from noon to 9:45, and again Sunday from noon to 6:45 pm. Tickets $5 online or $10 at the event.

Sunday Parkland Games. Sunday afternoons spent strolling along the Charles can be so idyllic. Plus, the Charles River Conservancy is offering free games on Sunday afternoons near the Weeks footbridge all summer long. Games include bocce, basketball, and badminton, as well as a free yoga class from Karma Yoga Studios at 5 pm. Sounds like a perfect afternoon!
