You have probably heard of Eataly by now — we have been waiting with excitement for months for the Prudential Center location to be unveiled! Today at 4pm, Eataly opens its doors. (The first 100 people in line get a free housemade mozzarella. ;) ) The Boston location of the Italian market (developed by an Italian and American team, including partner Mario Batali) will feature four restaurants as well as a casual wine bar and raw seafood bar, a creperie, cannoli cart, and a marketplace with more than 10,000 artisanal products. Even better, the 45,000 square foot market includes local fishmongers, an amazing cheese counter (the highlight for me), butcher, chocolate shop, patisserie, and more!
A few weeks ago, Natalie and I were able to take a sneak peek behind the curtains as the market prepared to open. Our tour included a lot of tasting, and we can confirm that there are all kinds of delicious things to be found. Take a look at some of our photos if you like.
A Lavazza café is the first thing found at either entrance to the marketplace (from the Pru or off Boylston Street) — very welcome for this tired mama! Also near the mall entrance is a sandwich counter, soup counter, salad bar, and freshly made potato chips — perfect to pick up over a lunch break.
From the Boylston Street entrance, you then find a wine shop, cannoli cart, and fresh pasta.
In line with Eataly’s motto of “eat, shop, learn,” the pasta is served at the market restaurants, but can also be taken home for you to recreate the dishes in your own kitchen. They will make gluten-free pasta and pizza as well (although the shared kitchen may mean this isn’t suitable for celiacs). There will also be a program of cooking classes.
The more casual raw bar and wine bar area at the center of the marketplace seems like a great place to meet after work or for an aperitivo.
Finally, the market has a gorgeous array of fruits, vegetables, breads, and everything else you would need to cook a feast, including more than 100 types of olive oil. Lourdes Smith of now-closed Fiore di Nonna is at the helm of a “mozzarella lab,” with delicious results, and the cheese counter also includes products from Narraganset Creamery, milk from High Lawn Farm and other local delights.
Eataly will be open 7 days a week, with the cafés opening at 7am and the rest of the market at 9am. We are so excited to have this in Boston! Find out more on the Eataly website.
