An Interview with the Newest Elle Woods
Last week, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kelly Felthous, who will be playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, The Musical at the North Shore Music Theatre from November 1-13. Kelly’s energy was contagious. She immediately made us want to get in our pajamas, pop some popcorn, have a sleepover and giggle all evening long. Just like Elle, Kelly seemed to have a certain confidence and ease about her.
Kelly is returning to the North Shore Music Theatre after being part of other productions, including her recent role of Serena Katz in Fame, which took her to China. How neat is that? Kelly first came to the North Shore as a nineteen year old, ready for her first professional role playing Kathy Seldon in Singin’ in the Rain. She loved the experience and is so glad to be back.
Kelly grew up in sunny San Diego where she was born into the acting industry. Her mother owned a performing arts studio and she started dancing with her mother as a young girl. When Kelly is able to return to San Diego, she has the pleasure of performing with her sister, who teaches acting. And for her mom? Currently, she is a costume designer. Also, fun tidbit: Kelly’s mother recently became the loving owner of a Chihuahua, similar to Elle’s very own Bruiser.
As a bubbly blonde, Kelly says that she very much relates to the character of Elle Woods. In the acting world, judgement often comes with the territory. Moving from California to Massachusetts, both Elle and Kelly have had to dismiss those judgements and learn to stand in their own shoes.
Kelly is a big fan of Reese Witherspoon and the original Legally Blonde movie series. Kelly said that she truly loves playing Elle and is thrilled that director Nick Kenkel has made space for the cast to stand up for their respective characters. As actors, they are able to own the show. And for Kelly, that has made all the difference. She loves the cast and production team, and seems to be having so much fun. Which is what it is all about, right?
Now that Kelly is back in Massachusetts, she’s happy to kick back at her favorite North Shore spot, Wild Horse Cafe. She loves the ambiance; live music and martinis. Kelly always orders The Girl Scout – a martini where the glass is dipped in chocolate. Oh my goodness. She loves Wild Horse’s homemade potato chips, too.
So, Kelly’s fashion advice for you? She said, just like Elle, wear what makes you feel confident and good. If you feel like a million dollars in a pair of leggings, then do that. People often look at Elle and wonder why she would wear high heels and tight clothes. Kelly says that is what makes Elle happy.
Kelly’s final piece of wisdom: do what makes you feel like a superstar. I think that’s a sentiment we can all get behind that.A big thank you to Kelly for taking time out of her busy schedule to chat with us! Tickets are still available for Legally Blonde.
