Linden Leaf Designs

One of my absolute favorite ways to spend a Sunday in the city is to browse South End galleries and the shops and stands of SOWA Open Market. While browsing recently I happened upon Helen Schroeder of Linden Leaf Designs, and was instantly smitten by her beautiful prints.

Helen is originally from Minneapolis (from the city’s Linden Hills neighborhood, which inspired the name of her company), but has called Boston home since 2006. She graduated from Northeastern in 2010 with an interdisciplinary degree in Art for Social Development, a program she designed┬ásynthesizing studio art, human services, and education. When Helen is not making and selling artwork, she works as an art program coordinator and art teacher at a social service agency in Boston.

Linden Leaf Designs got its start late in 2008, when Helen started creating cut paper collages of Minneapolis landmarks and memories for family members and friends as gifts. While she had never worked with paper before, she quickly came to love the way that the medium’s layers, textures, and patterns could tell a story and reveal a place’s personality.

She began selling her work on Etsy, and things took off from there. A sense of place has always been a strong inspiration in her life and her artwork, and Linden Leaf Designs has allowed her to explore her relationship with the cities she call home, as well as creating connections with others who feel the same love for these special places. I especially love all the depictions of Boston!

Helen comments that “as an artist and art educator, I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of art to create change in individuals and communities, and I’m crazy lucky to be able to live this belief out every day in all aspects of my life. I love my second city something fierce, and get so much inspiration from my students, my neighborhood, adventures on my bike, and just letting the city drift in through my windows.”

We love the results! Stop by and see her this Sunday at SOWA (her last Sunday at the market)!
