Local Artist Mary Hughes

When I came across the website of local artist Mary Hughes a few weeks ago, I was fascinated by her unique way of looking at the world. Mary has a longstanding interest in landscape, and her work explores this inspiration in various ways. From her earliest painting of the Maine seashore as a child, to her more recent abstractions, the organic patterns of nature are central. Her most recent work references map-making and mark-making, with each layer of lines informed by the one below. We can’t wait for a chance to visit her Fenway studio.

Happy to say I have one of her paintings on my mantel in my home. It’s one of the first things people see when they enter and always noticed.
