The Weekender: April 18-20

Happy Friday, everyone! There will be so much activity this weekend in Boston, with the Marathon and Easter coming up. It is so wonderful to see our city open its arms to the world, and inspiring to think of the thousands of runners who will crossing the finish line on Monday (and all the hours of training that come before that moment!). We are sending them our best wishes, and all our love to those affected by last year’s events. It feels fitting to celebrate our city this weekend! Here are a few ways to enjoy the next few days:

A Sign of Spring. Giant swans retake the Public Garden lagoon this weekend! Mayor Walsh will be on hand to host the first Swan Boat ride of the season at 10 am on Saturday. The swans have been in the Public Garden for 138 years. They were originally launched by the Paget family in 1877. Robert Paget, a shipbuilder, was inspired by the opera Lohengrin, in which the hero is carried in a boat drawn by a swan. Visit the Swan Boat website for more information.

Raise a Glass. Wine Riot is back! Especially great for people haven’t had much exposure to wine in the past, this event brings lots of producers and distributors to the South End’s Park Plaza Castle for an evening dedicated to wine. Tickets are still available online through the Second Glass website.

Local Arts. The Saturday Local Artist Market (SLAM) at The Burren in Davis Square this weekend will feature various arts and crafts including jewelry, photography, painting, ceramics, and artisanal food. Sounds like our kind of shopping!

Cultivate your Curiousity. The Cambridge Science Festival begins today, and continues through April 27. A collaboration between Harvard, MIT, the Museum of Science, and Cambridge Public Schools and Public Libraries, the festival includes lots of events aimed at bringing fun, interactive science to the public. Check out the schedule of events online!

Wicked Cheap Boston. We are thrilled to welcome our newest contributor, Molly Kerrigan! She is an expert on enjoying Boston on a budget, and we are so excited to hear her ideas. Read more about Molly, and browse her great blog. (Look for more exciting news from us next week!)

Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like to see listed on The Weekender? To be considered, send us a note at info@thebostondaybook.com. Have a wonderful weekend! xo
