Cheap Date: Brix Wine Shop

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

It took 28 years and one 30 hour trip to Napa Valley but I have suddenly become a wine person. I went from barely knowing the difference between a Riesling and a rosé to using words like varietal and vintage in a matter of weeks. But it doesn’t take one quick jaunt across the country to learn to appreciate wine. There are a number of wine shops in and around Boston that offer free tastings and knowledgeable staff that can help you find your way to the perfect cabernet.

My fiancé and I recently visited the South End location of Brix Wine Shop for one of their weekly tastings. Appropriately for this Cheap Date series, the theme of the day was Budget Big Shots. All of the wines we tasted were $20-$25. If your usual wine shopping includes grabbing a bottle at Trader Joe’s, that may still seem a bit steep. The tasting, however, is completely free and there’s no pressure to buy. So you can at least pretend to be a high roller and then pop open the Two Buck Chuck at home.

Brix hosts tastings every Friday evening and Saturday afternoon in their South End location and every Thursday and Friday evening in their Financial District location.

Brix Wine Shop has locations at 1284 Washington St and 105 Broad St, Boston.
