Cheap Date: Knight Moves Cafe

Late last year, an entirely new type of cafe opened near Coolidge Corner in Brookline and it wasn’t just the promise of caffeine that got me excited. Along with the coffee and pastries, Knight Moves Cafe offers up a huge selection of board games and a cozy atmosphere in which to play.

If your last rendez-vous with a board game included moving a top hat piece past Boardwalk, you may be surprised at how much the industry has grown and evolved over the past few years.  From simple and silly card games to complex strategy based sagas, Knight Moves has something for everyone, including some classics.

Entrance to the cafe is free but if you decide to try out a game, a fee of $10 per person gets you unlimited time to play.  If you have no idea where to start, just ask! Everyone who works there can point you in the right direction and help you get set up.  Devon, the owner, knows how to play nearly every game on his shelves and is a patient rule-explainer.

Tips for any of you who may go here on a date early in the relationship: don’t be as sore a winner OR loser as I am.

Knight Moves Cafe is located at 1402 Beacon St, Brookline, MA.
