The Weekender: August 8-10

weekender

Happy weekend, everyone! The weather this weekend looks amazing – quintessential summer! I am heading to Kennebunkport to celebrate my husband’s birthday – any tips? I would love to hear them. If you’ll be in Boston this weekend, here are a few of the great things going on this weekend.

Summer on the Waterfront. To celebrate the 400 year anniversary of Boston Harbor’s discovery by Captain John Smith, the Boston Harbor Association has been celebrating waterfront neighborhoods. This week, the focus is on downtown, with events on the Greenway, in the North End, and on the Boston Harbor Islands. There are even free tickets to the Boston Harbor Islands available this weekend, where there will be concerts, plays, and lawn games. To see all the events, check out the Summer on the Waterfront website. (P.S. On Tuesday, they are offering a free trip to Spectacle Island – info here!)

Feast in the North End. This weekend, the North End is celebrating with the Madonna Della Cava feast, which has been held on the second weekend in August for many decades. There will be concerts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

Take a Class. It is so fun to learn something new, and there are so many great places to take a class or two in town. The BCAE is running some fun cooking classes this summer, including a trip to catch and cook lobsters on Saturday, and also have classes on many other topics. I’ve been having fun trying some new fitness classes this summer – lately I have been trying Core Fusion at Exhale. Or get in touch with your creative side! Artist Alissa Burke offers lots of fun online art classes that are not intimidating – for some of them all you need are pens, crayons, or kid’s paint.

Catch a Film. The Massachusetts Independent Film Festival continues this weekend with a selection of films at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge. Started by local filmmakers, the festival is dedicated to showcasing the independent spirit in film from around the world. You can check out the schedule and buy tickets on their website.

Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like to see listed on The Weekender? To be considered, send us a note at info@thebostondaybook.com. Have a wonderful weekend! xo
