A Donut Moment

Fried or baked, doughnut or donut, they are truly having a moment here in Boston. What began with a slow burn, and a few exciting flavors added to restaurant menus, has reached a fever pitch with the recent opening of Blackbird Doughnuts in the South End.

Union Square Donuts - Best Donuts in Boston

I started my daughter’s donut education early with Union Square Donuts, one of the first shops to hit the scene, in our old neighborhood of Somerville. They still serve up the flavor that sits atop my donut flavor pyramid, maple bacon glazed. Bacon naysayers be damned. This is sweet, salty perfection. Dessert disguised as breakfast food, pure genius. If the drive out to Somerville is too much to bear with kids in the car, hit up SoWa in the warmer months. You’ll be happy to find them manning a cart there every Sunday. Need a donut fix and can’t leave the house? Special event? They’ll actually come to you for a small fee and a minimum of one dozen ordered.

Prefer your donuts a little more old school? I’m eager to try Southie’s Dough Boy, pretty much a local institution. I am ashamed I have not visited before – and I call myself a Bostonian? Known for consistently churning out the classics for years, they got into the gourmet game with introductions such as strawberry frosted fruity pebbles and maple bacon. Feel free to take the trip whenever your donut craving strikes- they are open 24/7!

I am notorious for sneaking a donut into any order while dining out. Mistral often offers them during brunch (hands down one of the best spots for brunch in the city), from Boston crème to blueberry glazed, definitely indulge on your next visit. Likewise, our local hot spot in the ‘burbs, Steel & Rye offers a daily donut selection during Sunday brunch- be sure to ask first thing, they often sell out! I was lucky enough to work with pastry chef Meghan Thompson to create a lavender glazed banana donut for my baby shower there- outrageously good. Thompson has now moved on to the newly-opened Townsman, but you can still hit Steel & Rye for their delicious donuts every Sunday. Go early.

And finally, Blackbird Doughnuts, the latest venture from the Gallows team, recently opened at 492 Tremont Street. Hours? Wednesday through Sunday, 7am until they sell out. Current flavors listed on the site include wild cherry bismarck, pineapple habanero, and dark chocolate pomegranate. My mouth is watering. And I’m planning a trip this weekend.
