The Weekender: May 6-8

It’s Friday! We hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead of you, with lots of relaxation and maybe a visit with mom. Here are a few of our top picks for the days ahead.

Free Boston Harbor Island Ferries! This is opening weekend for the Boston Harbor Islands, and on Saturday you can catch free ferries to Georges and Spectacle Islands to celebrate. More info here — there’s lots to explore! (Read more: camping on Lovell’s Island and a sunset cruise on the Harbor.)

Mother’s Day. This Sunday, celebrate your mom with something special. Brunch always feels right to us on a Sunday, or a long visit with a pretty plant in hand.

Lilac Sunday. Sunday is also the designated lilac celebration day at the Arnold Arboretum. There is plenty to do — with tours of the lilacs, activities, and and lots of food trucks on site (including Clover, Bon Me, Cameo Macaroon, Roxy’s, Mei Mei, and more). More info on the event website.

Duckling Day. Don’t be surprised to see a few extra ducklings in the park on Sunday — the Friends of the Public Garden are hosting Duckling Day, a Mother’s Day tradition for more than 30 years. Little ones in duckling costumes parade through the Public Garden after enjoying crafts, a magician, and a puppet show, while mom’s are treated to mini-massages from volunteer therapists. A fun way to support the Public Garden! Tickets are $35 per family, available online here.

ArtWeek Boston. The festival’s closing weekend includes events ranging from dance to music to fashion, and many are free or very affordable. Highlights for us: metal casting and welding at Sam Adams and a tour of public art in Cambridge. Program available online.

Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like to see listed on The Weekender? To be considered, send us a note at info@thebostondaybook.com. Have a wonderful weekend!
