The Weekender: December 29-31

boston events - weekend events

Can you believe we’re in the final few days of 2017? Honestly, it’s been a weird year and I am really looking forward to 2018 and the new energy it will bring. We hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend, and here are some fun things happening around town:

First Night

Ring in the New Year with First Night in Boston. Since 1975, this New Year’s Eve celebration has been something that we’ve looked forward to attending. The evening includes artistic performances, ice sculptures, light displays, and a fireworks show at 7pm. Full schedule of events here.

Blink! at Faneuil Hall

This is the final weekend for Blink!, a light and sound show which has been taking place for five weeks in Faneuil Hall. The focal point of the show is an 85-foot fir tree (the largest Christmas tree in the northeast!) that is decked out with decorations and lights paired with music.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Boston Harbor Now is hosting several festive events this weekend in celebration of the New Year. Take a stroll along the waterfront to check out the dozen or so ice sculptures, and count down to 2018 with a fireworks show at midnight on December 31st. Details here.

A Gingerbread House Competition

The Gingerbread House Design Competition (very official) is a fun way to highlight the talent of Boston architecture firms. How cool is that? This year, the theme is “Boston, You’re my Home”. The competition forces designers to create using a different medium, and also raises funds for the Community Design Resource Center. You can browse all creations at 290 Congress Street in Fort Point until January 2. Details on that here. Whether you’re able to see the gingerbread houses in-person or not, you can still vote until midnight on December 31st.

Boston Winter

Have you walked through Boston Winter yet? The market includes small shops, wine and beer tasting areas, a winding skating path, and lots of greenery and twinkly lights. We love seeing City Hall Plaza used in this way — as a gathering place and a space filled with holiday cheer.

In case you missed it, here’s a roundup featuring our favorite posts from this year. Have a great weekend!
